Michelin is a multinational French tire manufacturer headquartered in Clermont-Ferrand, France. It is the second largest tire manufacturer in the world. In 2017, Michelin and Safran presented the world’s first connected tires for the aeronautical industry. Named PresSense, the tire system is an embedded system that collects information on inflation pressure and has since been used in flight tests. In the same year, the company released a concept that encompassed an airless tire that could be embedded with RFID sensors to collect data and predict the performance and function of the vehicle.
Since then, Michelin has announced it will be equipping all of its automotive tires with RFID technology by 2023. Among other benefits, RFID enables improved tire management from the factory to the end of life and opens up possibilities for predictive maintenance.
