Sumitomo was formed in 1615 and operates as one of the largest Japanese business groups. Headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, the conglomeration includes many different companies, including Sumitomo Rubber Industries (SRI). In 2018, SRI announced Sensing Core for tires which is able to detect road conditions, tire load, and other information by analyzing the wheel speed signals that are generated by the rotation of the tires. This new advancement utilized software instead of additional sensors which reduced the cost and eliminated the need for maintenance. In the future, SRI is looking to make advancements to estimate tire damage and hopes their product will play a role in autonomous vehicle technology.
