The largest chemical producer in the world, BASF SE has subsidiaries and joint ventures in more than 80 countries and 400 production sites in Europe, Asia, Australia, the Americas and Africa. Headquartered in Ludwigshafen, Germany, BASF has customers in over 190 countries and supplies products to a wide variety of industries. A company this large has the resources to lead in plastic waste management and they are doing it by emphasizing compostability over mere biodegradability. Their two polymer groups - ecoflex and ecovio - are both certified compostable, the only difference being the ecoflex includes fossil stocks, whereas ecovio is bioplastics. BASF showcased their ecovio technology by producing the world's first compostable coffee capsule.
