Back in October 2019, Magic Number highlighted Zume as it was pivoting from pizza to packaging as it acquired Pivot, a compostable packaging company. Recently, Zume was granted a patent for a compostable food container. Although it is not solely for pizza, the patent does specifically mention pizza as one of the foods that can be cooked in the compostable product. Even more interesting, the application was filed on March 26, 2018, so Zume was potentially targeting and planning a switch to packaging as early as 2018.
Other noteworthy activity this week included another patent for Novamont directed towards polyester compositions and another patent application for Footprint directed to methods and apparatus for manufacturing fiber-based produce containers. Novamont and Footprint are some of the leading innovators of the biodegradable packaging sector so it is critical to track their activity. Magic Number makes it easy to monitor patent activity so subscribe to the Biodegradable Packaging Sector so you don't miss the next "big thing".
