3 Independent Claims

  • Independent Claim 1. A water-soluble unit dose article comprising at least one sealed compartment, the water-soluble unit dose article comprising a first water soluble film comprising a firstwater soluble resinand a second water soluble film comprising a second water soluble resinwherein the first film is sealed to the second film to form the at least one sealed compartmentwherein the first water soluble resin comprises at least onepolyvinyl alcohol homopolymer or at least one polyvinyl alcohol copolymer or a blend thereof, the at least one polyvinyl alcohol homopolymer or at least one polyvinyl alcohol copolymer or blend thereof having a 4% solution viscosity in demineralizedwater at 25.degree. C. in a range of about 8 cP to about 40 cP, or about 12 cP to about 30 cP, or about 14 cP to about 25 cPwherein the second water soluble resin comprises at least one polyvinyl alcohol homopolymer or at least one polyvinyl alcoholcopolymer or a blend thereof, the at least one polyvinyl alcohol homopolymer or at least one polyvinyl alcohol copolymer or blend thereof having a 4% solution viscosity in demineralized water at 25.degree. C. in a range of about 4 cP to about 35 cP, orabout 10 cP to about 20 cP, or about 10 cP to about 15 cP, or about 12 cP to about 14 cPand wherein the 4% solution viscosity in demineralized water at 25.degree. C. of the at least one polyvinyl alcohol homopolymer or the at least one polyvinylalcohol copolymer or the blend thereof of the first water soluble resin is greater than the 4% solution viscosity in demineralized water at 25.degree. C. of the at least one polyvinyl alcohol homopolymer or the at least one polyvinyl alcohol copolymeror the blend thereof of the second water soluble resin and the difference between the 4% solution viscosity in demineralized water at 25.degree. C. of the at least one polyvinyl alcohol homopolymer or the at least one polyvinyl alcohol copolymer or theblend thereof of the first water soluble resin and the 4% solution viscosity in demineralized water at 25.degree. C. of the at least one polyvinyl alcohol homopolymer or the at least one polyvinyl alcohol copolymer or the blend thereof of the secondwater soluble resin is about 2 cP to about 20 cP, or about 3 cP to about 15 cP, or about 4 cP to about 12 cPprovided that when the sealed compartment contains a fabric care or household care composition and a film comprises a blend of a polyvinylalcohol homopolymer resin and an anionic polyvinyl alcohol copolymer resin, then both then first water soluble film and the second water soluble film comprise blends that include 65 wt. % or greater of an anionic polyvinyl alcohol copolymer resin, basedon the total weight of polyvinyl alcohol resins in the blendand provided that when the sealed compartment contains a fabric care or household care composition and a film comprises a blend of at least two anionic polyvinyl alcohol copolymer resins,then both then first water soluble film and the second water soluble film comprise blends of at least two anionic polyvinyl alcohol copolymer resins.

  • Independent Claim 40. Method of use of a first water-soluble film comprising a first water soluble resin and a second water-soluble film comprising a second water soluble resin to manufacture a water-soluble unit dose article optionally comprising a compositioncontained in the article, comprising sealing together along a seal area the first water-soluble film and the second water-soluble film, in order to improve the seal strength in the seal areawherein the first water soluble resin comprises at least onepolyvinyl alcohol homopolymer or at least one polyvinyl alcohol copolymer or a blend thereof, the at least one polyvinyl alcohol homopolymer or at least one polyvinyl alcohol copolymer or blend thereof having a 4% solution viscosity in demineralizedwater at 25.degree. C. in a range of about 8 cP to about 40 cPwherein the second water soluble resin comprises at least one polyvinyl alcohol homopolymer or at least one polyvinyl alcohol copolymer or a blend thereof, the at least one polyvinylalcohol homopolymer or at least one polyvinyl alcohol copolymer or blend thereof having a 4% solution viscosity in demineralized water at 25.degree. C. in a range of about 4 cP to about 35 cPand wherein the 4% solution viscosity in demineralizedwater at 25.degree. C. of the at least one polyvinyl alcohol homopolymer or the at least one polyvinyl alcohol copolymer or the blend thereof of the first water soluble resin is greater than the 4% solution viscosity in demineralized water at 25.degree. C. of the at least one polyvinyl alcohol homopolymer or the at least one polyvinyl alcohol copolymer or the blend thereof of the second water soluble resin and the difference between the 4% solution viscosity in demineralized water at 25.degree. C. ofthe at least one polyvinyl alcohol homopolymer or the at least one polyvinyl alcohol copolymer or the blend thereof of the first water soluble resin and the 4% solution viscosity in demineralized water at 25.degree. C. of the at least one polyvinylalcohol homopolymer or the at least one polyvinyl alcohol copolymer or the blend thereof of the second water soluble resin is about 2 cP to about 20 cPprovided that when the composition is a fabric care or household care composition and a filmcomprises a blend of a polyvinyl alcohol homopolymer resin and an anionic polyvinyl alcohol copolymer resin, then both then first water soluble film and the second water soluble film comprise blends that include 65 wt. % or greater of an anionicpolyvinyl alcohol copolymer resin, based on the total weight of polyvinyl alcohol resins in the blendand provided that when the composition is a fabric care or household care composition and a film comprises a blend of at least two anionic polyvinylalcohol copolymer resins, then both then first water soluble film and the second water soluble film comprise blends of at least two anionic polyvinyl alcohol copolymer resins.

  • Independent Claim 41. A process for using a unit dose article comprising the steps of: a. obtaining a water-soluble unit dose article comprising at least a first water-soluble film comprising a first water soluble resin, a second water-soluble film comprising asecond water soluble resin and a composition contained in the article, wherein the first water-soluble film and the second water-soluble film are chemically different to one another, wherein the first water soluble resin comprises at least one polyvinylalcohol homopolymer or at least one polyvinyl alcohol copolymer or a blend thereof, the at least one polyvinyl alcohol homopolymer or at least one polyvinyl alcohol copolymer or blend thereof having a 4% solution viscosity in demineralized water at25.degree. C. in a range of about 8 cP to about 40 cPwherein the second water soluble resin comprises at least one polyvinyl alcohol homopolymer or at least one polyvinyl alcohol copolymer or a blend thereof, the at least one polyvinyl alcoholhomopolymer or at least one polyvinyl alcohol copolymer or blend thereof having a 4% solution viscosity in demineralized water at 25.degree. C. in a range of about 4 cP to about 35 cPand wherein the 4% solution viscosity in demineralized water at25.degree. C. of the at least one polyvinyl alcohol homopolymer or the at least one polyvinyl alcohol copolymer or the blend thereof of the first water soluble resin is greater than the 4% solution viscosity in demineralized water at 25.degree. C. ofthe at least one polyvinyl alcohol homopolymer or the at least one polyvinyl alcohol copolymer or the blend thereof of the second water soluble resin and the difference between the 4% solution viscosity in demineralized water at 25.degree. C. of the atleast one polyvinyl alcohol homopolymer or the at least one polyvinyl alcohol copolymer or the blend thereof of the first water soluble resin and the 4% solution viscosity in demineralized water at 25.degree. C. of the at least one polyvinyl alcoholhomopolymer or the at least one polyvinyl alcohol copolymer or the blend thereof of the second water soluble resin is about 2 cP to about 20 cPcontacting the water-soluble unit dose article with water to dissolve at least one of the films and therebyrelease the composition contained within the article provided that when the composition is a fabric care or household care composition and a film comprises a blend of a polyvinyl alcohol homopolymer resin and an anionic polyvinyl alcohol copolymer resin,then both then first water soluble film and the second water soluble film comprise blends that include 65 wt. % or greater of an anionic polyvinyl alcohol copolymer resin, based on the total weight of polyvinyl alcohol resins in the blendand providedthat when the composition is a fabric care or household care composition and a film comprises a blend of at least two anionic polyvinyl alcohol copolymer resins, then both then first water soluble film and the second water soluble film comprise blends ofat least two anionic polyvinyl alcohol copolymer resins.
