Its primary business includes processing payments between the banks of merchants and the card issuing banks or credit unions of the purchasers who use the "Mastercard" brand. Mastercard was an initial partner in the Libra Association — a consortium established to govern Facebook’s planned stablecoin project, Libra, which fell apart in 2019. Mastercard has supported cryptocurrency transactions since 2021 and is launching a cryptocurrency credit card in 2021 in partnership with Gemini.
