Microsoft has announced Azure Edge Zones, a new service that extends the functionalities of the cloud-based platform Azure to an edge computing infrastructure. In July of 2019, Microsoft partnered with AT&T, the first network to provide 5G mobile networks in the US, to develop edge computing solutions. Through the new service, Microsoft is broadening its reach by setting up micro data centers in high-density cities and establishing Edge Zones integrated directly with 5G partner networks to allow for high-speed, large-volume data transfer. The company is also rolling out Azure Private Edge Zones to set up secure, private 5G networks for sensitive operations.
Microsoft has a strong IP portfolio with a focus on handling edge computing traffic. Azure Edge Zones is the most robust platform of its kind so far.
