Does edge computing require data centers or even large computing hubs? Allen Salmasi's Veea is betting it doesn't with its lineups of edge hubs.
Veea sells hardware roughly the size of a Wi-Fi router that can connect to nearby devices and provide enough computing power for data processing on site, regardless of whether the connectivity is through cellular, Wi-Fi, IoT, or another protocol. The company currently has four VeeaHub models: a regular model for home and small business, a Pro model for enterprise customers, a Pro Outdoor model for harsh environments, and a Pro RT model for smart rail and other connected transportation uses. The VeeaHubs are controlled using the Veea Control Center (desktop application) and the VeeaHub Device Manager (on-the-go).
Currently, Veea is selling the VeeaHubs as a service at $20/month per hub, making them a solution for both pop-up and permanent applications. There are additional services available, such as Veea's AdEdge software, which analyzes the faces of people as they look at digital advertising, and does the processing locally.
Veea was founded by Allen Salmasi and his son, Michael. Allen Salmasi is a force to be reckoned with in the communications industry, as he was previously a major shareholder in Qualcomm and founded NextWave Telecom and NextWave Wireless (which sold its spectrum to AT&T in 2013). Veea has no published IP, but considering it was only founded in 2018 and now has over 100 employees, means there is likely significant unpublished IP.
In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, Veea has announced that its VeeaHub-based solutions are ready to meet the need of front-line workers, ready for indoor and outdoor use at “pop-up” testing, temporary surge sites, and treatment centers.
