Akamai Makes a Push with Blockchain

Edge Computing Patent Forecast®

August 6, 2020

Akamai has been one of the leaders in the edge computing sector for a while now, with a lot of earlier success in 2012 and 2013 setting them up to be second-most in patent documents across all categories in the sector. More notably, they have been the undisputed leader in the quieter category of blockchain-based platforms. Evidently from the most recent batch of patent applications that were published, Akamai is looking to keep that lead in the category. They are easily ahead of the other companies with seventeen documents in the last five years. 2020 has been an active year so far with one issued patent in April and five patent applications being published this year, with the most recent being August 6th.

Akamai's most recent publication (US Pub #20200252450) teaches of a method that allows for low-latency and high-performance when handling transaction receipts through blockchain. This application is also a continuation of their patent issued in April and follows a trend of all of their patent applications published this year in that they all teach of methods relating to high-performance record-keeping or receipt handling. Akamai seems to be in a good position to continue leading the blockchain category of edge computing and they are clearly happy with their position so far, with Akamai CEO recently stating "We dominate edge computing". A bold claim, but they certainly have some exciting developments in the works to back it up.
