Qualcomm is a well-known chip technology company, most commonly known for making modems for cellular networks and many types of semiconductor technology. However, this week they have released three new AI accelerator chips targeted toward edge computing. With the rapid growth in edge computing and expectations for it to rival cloud computing in the coming years, these chips are Qualcomm's step to start preparing for that future. Qualcomm is also leveraging these chips to be used in new 5G data centers as 5G availability grows as well.
While fairly quiet in the patent space with only three patent documents in the last three years, it certainly is not surprising for Qualcomm to be developing in the space. Albeit late to the game, the field is still new enough that they could just now be investing in this technology and still be in a position to be a leader in the industry, as Intel has done. It will not be surprising to see Qualcomm applications start showing up in the coming months as their focus shifts to these growing sectors of technology.
