Founded in 2004, Cary, North Carolina based Trilliant has focused its company around building a communications network it calls the advanced metering infastructure (AMI) that utilizes the internet of things to monitor electricity consumption. Through the AMI, smart meters can transmit the electricity usage they record back to power suppliers, who can then use the information to make determinations about electricity supply and pricing. While they have a respectable number of patents in the sector, Trilliant's patent portfolio is incredibly focused, and the company has yet to stray far from building up the AMI.
