Could Wearables Become Pandemic Essentials?

Pandemics/Epidemics (Free) Patent Forecast®

June 4, 2020

There exists a tremendous need for an effective-early warning system in order to lower the risk of asymptomatic individuals spreading COVID-19. Wearable technologies, such as Fitbits, Apple watches, and Oura rings are currently being used in research studies to see if wearable data can detect COVID-19 symptoms.

Surprisingly, the greatest potential has stemmed from the lesser-known wearable known as the Oura Ring. On May 28, WVU Rockefeller Neuroscience institute announced the Oura Ring’s capability to predict COVID-19-related symptoms up to three days in advance. However, the Oura Ring also must be coupled with an app to measure cognition and other symptoms in order to forecast symptoms effectively. Thus, Oura might be interested in obtaining IP for a recently issued patent from Battelle Memorial Institute (US Patent No.10430904). Patent ‘0904 outlines a system using a structured data set with a web-based symptom checker and a predictive model to diagnose individuals.

With the emerging attraction that wearable technology has been attaining for diagnostic warning systems, there is a strong possibility for an evolution of wearable technology from novelties into health essentials. Wearable tech companies should begin looking into IP that involves software applications for detecting and monitoring diseases such as patent ‘0904.
