There is no strict definition of what exactly the Metaverse is as it’s an everchanging concept that continues to grow as the technology that drives it grows. However, the lack of knowing exactly what the Metaverse is has not stopped the buzz that has built up around it. Companies like Microsoft, Samsung, Sony, and IBM have been rapidly developing technology with the intention of dominating the metaverse space. Facebook has gone as far as changing their name to Meta and acquiring Oculus, a leader in immersive virtual reality technology, for 2 billion dollars in 2014. The patent data shows that there has been an increasing level of interest by companies to control the Metaverse/virtual reality market. From a glance the Metaverse has an increasing number of applications from gaming to ecommerce and its popularity is continuing to grow.
