nChain is a blockchain-focused research and development startup that was founded in 2015. They are based in London and were acquired in April of 2017 by a venture capital company, PI High Tech Private Equity SuB-Fund, based in Malta. nChain builds enterprise-grade blockchain solutions and has only recently entered the space, with their oldest filing in the U.S. relating to securities tokenization happening in February of 2017, shortly before they were acquired. They have also been active with filing their patent applications internationally.
nChain received a significant investment at the end of 2019 from the Ayre Group, run by Calvin Ayre, who stated that nChain is "the world leader in chain-agnostic blockchain patents targeted at the tokenized-everything world, which is where we are all headed." Calvin Ayre also joined nChain's strategic advisement board in December of 2019 due to his long involvement in the Bitcoin sector.
