Philips announced at CES 2019 a renewed focus on its sleep technology product lines. The company's consumer technology strategy follows a heavy investment into sleep technology intellectual property. While Fitbit may lead the consumer sleep technology sector in total number of published documents, the diversity of Philips' portfolio makes it one of the strongest contenders in the IP arena. In fact, Philips is the leading assignee in each sleep sector category except Data Processing and Analytics, where Fitbit is the prominent player with its wearable technology IP. Philips has the potential to expand its protection of devices themselves; however, the lack of Philips' activity in this category is generally due to a focus on integrated software (e.g., environmental control) rather than on protection of hardware directly.
