Facense, a medical startup focusing on the capturing of vital signs, was issued on 5/28/2019 its 23rd patent since January of last year focusing on taking and interpreting readings from the face using small cameras. Facense combines machine learning with thermal measurements, eye tracking, and other measurements to improve personal health. By unobtrusively measuring vital signs, Facense technology is intended to provide neurofeedback or alert the user that a migraine may be coming, for example. The company is looking to license or cooperate with smart glasses or AR/VR firms. The everyday consumers’ smart glasses field continues to grow, both in AR with companies such as Google (new Google Glass) and North (Focals by North) gaining major attention, as well as in eye screening with firms such as Eyenuk and Topcon.
