Why has Limelight entered Edge Computing?

Limelight Networks is primarily a content provider (content delivery network) who is focused on decreasing latency. As a result, they have moved into edge cloud infrastructure-as-a-service. Utilizing a private fiber backbone, they have over 100 points of presence (PoPs) for their edge services, providing over 42 Tbps of egress capacity. The company has consistently filed patent applications in the edge computing space since 2011, and much of their focus has been in the Communications category. These patents tend to focus on decreasing latency and edge systems analytics. The company also has partnered with Linode to improve their infrastructure, partnered with Tencent to grow their market reach in China.

Limelight markets the Limelight Orchestrate Platform, which provides Integrated content delivery, web acceleration, origin storage, video management, cloud security, and support services. The product is used for on-demand or streaming video, websites, games, software, and more. Based on their filing trends and physical assets, Limelight Networks is expected to be a major player on the infrastructure side of Edge Computing for years to come.
