Verizon has not been quiet about 5G, heavily publicizing its roll-out, including into 13 NFL stadiums as part of a goal to reach 30 cities across the US. One factor that will be important in the success of 5G will be access to edge computing, as 5G will require more and more data to be transported and processed. In an effort to support their 5G growth, Verizon CEO Hans Vestberg recently announced that the company will be rolling out an edge computing center in the fourth quarter of 2019.
Verizon has 11 published documents in the edge computing space and is far from a leader. However, the company has the capital to acquire if need be, and it would not be surprising to see them partnering with other edge providers in order to quickly gain market share over other telecom providers.
