One of the founding fathers of edge computing, Cisco is continuously growing and diversifying their portfolio. In the last two years, the company has begun filing applications that teach blockchain enablement, appealing to increased security potential. How this might play into Cisco's revenue strategy, however, remains unseen.

One potential revenue strategy for Cisco could possibly be through metering of computing assets. Cisco's third application regarding metering was recently published. It teaches methods of monitoring performance data across microservices and tracking data flow across virtual switches. 

What Cisco plans to do with this sort of technology remains to be seen, but it could be a strong licensing target for global cloud and edge service providers, as well as hardware producers looking to implement the technology in their chips.
