Verizon's Renewed Focus

Edge Computing Patent Forecast®

August 27, 2020

Verizon originally invested heavily in edge computing, with fairly active development happening in 2015 and 2016. Oddly, it then had quiet years from 2017 until late 2019 before coming back with renewed development in the industry. This may have been due to it aligning its efforts with 5G's role in edge computing or mobile edge computing, which have been Verizon's main focus in its recent development plan.

Most recently, Verizon was granted a patent on August 11th for a serverless computing architecture (US Patent #10740149) that utilizes 5G function nodes. Verizon has also been making waves in the news lately with its partnership with AWS in Boston and San Francisco to deliver 5G mobile edge computing. While T-Mobile is arguably the leader in rolling out 5G coverage in the US so far, Verizon is well-positioned to compete against T-Mobile with its edge computing offerings.
