Bemis is Back Baby

Biodegradable Packaging Patent Forecast®

October 29, 2020

Bemis hasn't had any significant activity in the biodegradable packaging sector since 2015. It now has a patent publication for a recyclable film and packaging.  Bemis, who was acquired by Amcor in 2019, launched Encore™, an ultra-clear recyclable polyethylene film in 2018.  The patent publication appears focused on polyethylene films so it is most likely related to the Encore™ product.  This publication is a national stage entry of PCT/US18/53120, which indicates a continued interest in the patent application.

Additionally, on September 29, 2020, Amcor announced that it had developed the world's first recyclable retort flexible packaging. The product, which uses Amcor's AmLite HeatFlex Recyclable solution, has the potential to be used in a variety of retort applications where products with a long shelf life require high-barrier, high-heat resistant packaging. This invention demonstrates Amcor's commitment to sustainable packaging.

Together, Bemis and Amcor only have 5 documents in the biodegradable packaging sector prior to this recent publication as shown in the Patent Radian® below. However, with the continued prosecution of the Bemis recyclable film and packaging application and with Amcor's recent innovation, it would come as zero surprise to see an uptick in patent activity from Amcor.
