Johnston Packaging PTY Limited and tForm joined the biodegradable packaging sector this week. 

Johnston Packaging is an Australian company that specializes in manufacturing printed and folded cardboard cartons. Additionally, Johnston Packaging offers packaging solutions for household, food, beverage, and pharmaceutical items.  Johnston Packaging has been in business for over 40 years -- so why expand into the US market now? They’re not alone, competitive investment in biodegradable packaging has been increasing steadily for years.  Environmental awareness and activism is placing demands on commercial product suppliers to save the planet. Johnston’s new patent application is directed to packaging rings for beverage cans. It’s not revolutionary -- Patent Forecast highlighted biodegradable and compostable six pack rings in April 2019. Johnston Packaging may need to differentiate its product offerings and/or look to license or partner with companies like E6PR to gain some market share. 

Another entrant to the biodegradable packaging sector is tForm. Its application includes using recyclable paper materials to form an insulative protective packaging material. Established in 2015, tForm specializes in custom and thermoformed packaging products for low-to-mid volume and niche market segments including medical, automotive, electronic, industrial, and food packaging. We don’t see a major impact in the larger market for tForm yet, but may see interesting materials emerge from their team.
