Jem Packaging Limited, a UK-based manufacturer of printed packaging, may be looking to break into the US market. One of its directors, Roland William Page, had a patent application published directed towards a biodegradable container. The application fails to mention Jem Packaging so the application could have easily gone unnoticed if it wasn’t for Patent Forecast®.  

Jem Packaging is focused on sustainability and specializes in the production of high quality folding cartoons and printed labels.  It is accredited with BRC and ISO 9001 certification, which allows it to print food packaging including apertures, embossing, hot and cold foil blocking, easy peel zips, braille, multi colour reverse printing for inner food sleeve design, pattern gloss, matte or combination varnish, 4/6 corner and crash lock bottom box. Jem Packaging was incorporated in 2002 so it’s unclear why they are just now pushing for a US Patent besides potentially expanding into the US.  

This application is one that could easily slip under your radar in the mass quantities of weekly patent documents and because at first glance, the application appears to be for a solo inventor. Although Jem Packaging seems relatively small in the big picture of the Biodegradable Packaging Sector, this easily could have been a major foreign company (e.g. NaturePac) entering the US Biodegradable Packaging Market.
