As a tech industry leader, it is no surprise that IBM has thrown its hat in the ring of energy financial settlements. While IBM has traditionally had a larger presence in developing platforms and has recently begun investing more in the transactional side of energy delivery like other major players in the sector, unlike other large tech companies such as Itron who have a focused product that was later expanded upon, overall IBM's portfolio has had a broader focus from the start. IBM is developing a platform that can take input from smart meters in addition to weather conditions at the meters' location to get a holistic view of energy usage in a specific area and allow electricity supply to be upregulated or downregulated based on need. Due to the wide-ranging nature of its portfolio, IBM is seemingly trying to develop an entire system for monitoring and selling energy.
