The world record holder of the energy conversion efficiency of CIGS solar cells on flexible polymer substrates, EMPA (Swiss Federal Laboratories for Material Science and Technology), broke its own record and achieved an efficiency of 20.8%. This improvement is expected to directly affect the market soon, since flexible CIGS solar modules are already commercially available through Flisom. In fact, the head of the EMPA Laboratory for Thin Films and Photovoltaics—Ayodhya N. Tiwari—had co-founded Flisom, and the two entities maintain a long-standing research partnership. Flisom continues to expand its US patent portfolio, most of which are directed to CIGS solar cells, including its most recently published patent application.
