Tesla is seeking to revive its residential solar business by selling solar panels and related equipment for up to 41 percent less than the national average price. It was able to cut prices via a series of operating cost reductions, such as standardizing systems, requiring customers to order online, asking customers to photographic their electric meters and other equipment, etc. Although known primarily for its electric vehicles, Tesla had acquired SolarCity in 2016 and owns a strong patent portfolio in the Thin Film Photovoltaics sector, demonstrating that the company has proprietary technology to support its renewed solar business venture.
